Founded in 1991 in a seaside community two hours south of Tokyo, Hayama
Cabinetmakers specializes in constructing a wide variety of tables, cabinets
and chests. In 2004, we moved to Washington, DC and now have a studio on
Captiol Hill. Here you’ll find examples of cabinets, tables and chests.
There's
no reason why a well made cabinet can't last through a century or more of
daily use and look better with each passing year. The formula is simple:
- Cabinet-grade old
growth wood cut from managed forests
- Individual
boards matched for grain, color and density
- Attention
to detail in design, joinery, construction and finish
A
word about finishes...
-
We
use two finishes. The first is equal parts of raw tung oil, boiled
linseed oil and urethane. The oil component penetrates the wood while
the urethane provides moisture protection. After four to six coats, we
apply a coat or two of oil and beeswax. This finish is durable and easy
to repair.
